Experts Address Series 2017-18 (26 February 2018)

Professor Michael Shamos will give a public lecture "How Machines Learn (Without Being Taught)" on 26 February 2018.

Speaker: Professor Michael Shamos
Distinguished Career Professor, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University
Visiting Professor, Department of Computer Science, HKU

Abstract: This largely non-technical talk will explain today’s trends in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In particular, we will explore the concept of “deep learning” by neural networks, which allows AI systems to detect patterns in data on their own without requiring human guidance. We will present several deployed applications of deep learning, such as medical diagnosis, image recognition, speech recognition and self-driving cars.
