Data Privacy Policy Statements

The Hong Kong Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance was brought into force on 20th December 1996. The purpose of the Ordinance is to protect the privacy interests of living individuals in relation to personal data. It also contributes to Hong Kong's continued economic well being by safeguarding the free flow of personal data to Hong Kong from restrictions by countries that already have data protection laws. The Ordinance covers any data relating directly or indirectly to a living individual (data subject), from which it is practicable to ascertain the identity of the individual and which are in a form in which access or processing is practicable. It applies to any person (data user) that controls the collection, holding, processing or use of personal data. The University of Hong Kong ('the University') is committed to meeting internationally-recognised standards of personal data privacy protection, in compliance with the requirements of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. In doing so, it will be ensured that the University's staff comply with the strictest standards of security and confidentiality. The MSc Programme Office of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong ('the Programme Office'), being part of the HKU, complies with all relevant and applicable HKU privacy policies.

 

Personal Information Collection Statements of MSc(ECom&IComp) Websites

The MSc Programme Office of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong ('the Programme Office') recognizes its website as a key resource for information provision, communication, publicity and administration. The Programme Office will ensure the proper use of the website and the technologies in fulfillment of its missions.

Sometimes it may be necessary for the user to provide the Programme Office with data in connection with application for admission, registration for events and seminars, etc. It is possible that any information submitted electronically could be observed by a third party in transit. The Programme Office will try their best to provide secure channel to minimize the chance of data captured by a third party.

The information you provide to us will be used by the Programme Office and the University for all administrative and academic purposes related to the activities in the University. The Programme Office may also use your personal information for sending you news, announcements, giving initiatives, offers and promotions (which may be considered as direct marketing) for any seminars, events, activities, courses and programmes, which are kinds of educational, academic research, professional development, professional and social networking services, organized by the University, its subordinate organisations and its alumni associations only with your consent.

For our students and graduates, the information will be used for all purposes related to your studies in the University as well as your association with the University after graduation as appropriate. The Programme Office may also use your personal information for sending you news, announcements, giving initiatives, offers and promotions (which may be considered as direct marketing) for any seminars, events, activities, courses and programmes, which are kinds of educational, academic research, professional development, professional and social networking services, organized by the University, its subordinate organizations, its alumni associations, other fellow students, graduates and other non-HKU affiliated but professionally related organizations through various communication channels only with your consent.

The Programme Office will not use and share your personal information for direct marketing and any other purposes that are not mentioned above without your consent. If the Programme Office will use your data for such purpose, you will be asked on our data collection forms. You can opt out at any time from such marketing activities using your personal information, preferrably by writing to us in the form of a signed letter or by a secure channel electronically. However, please note that if you provided your personal information directly to other offices in other occasions within the University, e.g. Development & Alumni Affairs Office, you have to write to them separately.

The Programme Office will treat such personal data provided by the user as strictly confidential. It will not disclose any personal information provided by the user to any external body or organization unless the user has agreed to do so or it is required by law.

You have the right to access the information provided by you and to update it if appropriate. Should you wish to access or correct your personal information held by us, please submit a request in the form of a signed letter or by a secure channel electronically to the Programme Office.
