HKU-CDS Launches First Dual-Site Semester in Shanghai

The School of Computing and Data Science (CDS) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has embarked on a new chapter, launching its first-ever dual-site semester across Hong Kong and Shanghai. As the 2025–2026 academic year enters its second semester, CDS students in the exclusive Tech Immersion Fellowship programme can now split their studies between HKU’s main campus and the newly opened HKU-CDS Teaching and Research Site in Shanghai—a strategic move that redefines cross-border tech education.

This officially activates CDS’s “one school, two teaching sites” model, integrating world-class academia with industry innovation. Nestled in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park—an epicentre for cutting-edge technology, research, and startup ecosystems—the new Site empowers students to learn, research, and collaborate at the heart of the nation’s leading innovation hub.

Professor Yi MA, Director of CDS, highlighted the significance: “Since its founding on July 1, 2024, CDS has pioneered multiple firsts in education and research. We are dedicated to transforming conventional educational models to address the rapid changes in industry and society. The launch of dual teaching sites in Hong Kong and Shanghai aligns seamlessly with local and national strategic initiatives in science and technology, equipping the future leaders with essential skills in computing, data science, and artificial intelligence. This ‘one school, two teaching sites’ model represents a major step in fostering innovation and global competitiveness.”

Professor Tak-Wah LAM, Deputy Director of CDS, detailed the Site’s student-focused offerings: “The Site is open to students at all levels—undergraduates, master’s, and PhD—for immersive study in Shanghai. It provides students with direct exposure to Shanghai’s high‑tech landscape and exclusive internship opportunities, and it is supported by advanced computing facilities, modern sports amenities, and high‑speed connection to HKU main campus. We have invited prominent industry leaders from companies to share cutting-edge insights with students, bridging academic learning with real-world applications.”

For the second semester running from 19 January to 26 April 2026, the Shanghai Site will welcome over 200 CDS undergraduate and postgraduate students in this landmark semester. The state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities will also open to HKU students enrolled in CDS's AI Literacy course, creating a unique interdisciplinary and innovative learning environment.

1st HKU CDS TPg Alumni Annual Dinner, 20 December 2025

The 1st HKU CDS TPg Alumni Annual Dinner in Hong Kong jointly organised by MSc CompSc Alumni Association, MSc ECom&IComp Alumni Association and MSc FTDA Alumni Association and the Master Programmes Office had been completed in 20 December 2025 with great success. Apart from this event, similar alumni dinners had been organised in Shenzhen and Shanghai before.

Over 120 alumni and current students across different master programmes as well as teaching and administrative staff participated in the dinner with full of fun and unforgettable memory. Dr Loretta Choi, Executive Director of SCDS Master Programmes Office, also took this opportunity to give an opening remark to thank you alumni’s unlimited support over the years and encourage current students to seize this opportunity to have more interaction with alumni. She also introduced the newly launched “Delta X Tech Immersion Fellowship” open to our MSc(CompSc), MSc(ECom&IComp), and MDASC students in 2025-26. Enrolled students will stay at HKU-CDS Shanghai Teaching and Research Site in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Pudong for at least a half semester to immerse in Shanghai’s tech ecosystem and study cutting-edge courses.

The Master Programmes Office strives to develop a closer social network across alumni associations of different programmes, and to tighten connections with alumni and current students through organising a series of student enrichment and alumni engagement activities in the future.

Delta X Tech Immersion Kicks Off with a Dynamic New Class of Fellows

The Delta X Tech Immersion Fellowship Orientation Session was successfully held at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) on October 9, marking the beginning of an exciting academic journey for a new cohort of master’s programme students. The orientation welcomed newly admitted Delta X fellows and spotlighting the unique opportunities that await them.

Launched by the HKU School of Computing and Data Science (CDS), the Delta X Tech Immersion Fellowship is a pioneering initiative based in Shanghai, and is designed for top-performing students in the MSc(CompSc), MSc(ECom&IComp), and MDASC programmes. The fellowship offers an unparalleled blend of cutting-edge courses in Web3 and AI, cross-border learning opportunities, industry engagement, and exclusive internships, empowering them to thrive in the fast-evolving global tech landscape.

Professor Yi MA, Director of CDS, kicked off the event with a compelling address, highlighted that the uniqueness of this fellowship by bringing together the academic excellence in HKU and the abundant resources and opportunities in mainland China, creating a powerful platform for cultivating future tech leaders.

Professor Siu-Ming YIU, Master Programme Director of CDS shared the latest updates on the fellowship programme, internship opportunities, accommodation arrangements and the HKU-CDS Shanghai Teaching and Research Site.

The orientation concluded with an engaging networking session, where fellows connected with peers and faculty members, laying the foundation for a vibrant and collaborative Delta X community. This orientation marks not just the start of a programme, but the launch of a transformative experience for our talents.

Enhanced QS World University Rankings by Subjects for School of Computing and Data Science

Our School has achieved significant advancements in the latest QS World University Subject Rankings. This is a testament to our commitment to excellence in education, research, and innovation.

In the recently released rankings, we have risen from 25th to 18th in the field of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
