HKU MSc(ECom&IComp) Programme Overview

Programme Overview

Because there are many e-commerce or e-business programmes on offer in Hong Kong , we strongly advise you to make a careful scrutiny before making a decision to enroll in these difficult economic times. It is important that you enroll in a good one which can award you a qualification that is fit for purpose and long-term professional development. Naturally we think ours is the best, and here we mention some distinguishing features and strengths of our programme for your consideration:

(1) A pioneering and long-running programme

Ours is the first programme to bridge technology and business launched in Hong Kong by The University in September 1999, and the second in the world after Carnegie Mellon University of the United States. So we have had many years of experience to fine tune the design and operation of our programme.

Our goal has remained the same: to design a course of study for you, either as business executives, policy and decision makers, managers, or as information technologists, chief technical officers, in order to equip you with the latest knowledge about technology development and business opportunities in electronic commerce on the Internet.

(2) A dynamic and comprehensive curriculum

Our curriculum is visionary and comprehensive, comprising the core knowledge modules deemed essential for e-commerce and Internet computing professionals for the present as well as for the future. These modules are grouped as inter-related clusters which together give you a holistic understanding of e-commerce.  Within this framework, however, you are given a lot of flexibility to design your own study portfolio based on your career aspiration or requirements.

The ECOM-prefixed modules are on the whole more business oriented.  They give students a foundation on the impact of the Internet and the web on e-commerce, and a broad overview of e-commerce technologies.  However, the ECOM modules never lose sight of students’ need to understand technology.

The ICOM-prefixed modules require more technical entry knowledge.  They help students expand their system development and design skills.  But they never ignore the importance of technology in business application. Students are expected to ensure that they have the basic technology pre-requisites before enrolling in these modules.

(3) An international faculty of experts

Our instructors are subject specialists drawn from various disciplines and specialized areas in the University and other prestigious overseas institutions. They are in constant touch with the business world – writing up cases, consulting and undertaking research, or as expert witnesses in information technology-related law cases. They regularly incorporate their findings to update the curriculum to ensure its relevance to business.

Our instructors are also known for their use of interactive teaching formats, including lectures, smaller group seminars, case studies analyses, group project presentations, and laboratory exercises. So learning is not just limited to you sitting passively in class to listen to lectures. They demand your participation and sharing viewpoints and experiences with them and your fellow students, in order to stimulate your critical thinking on the topics’ relevance to your profession, both in the short-term and medium-term.

(4) Annual micro curriculum evaluation

The Programme is subject to an annual external review by a senior faculty member from another university, as required by university regulations. . But we also have a rigorous internal system of annual micro evaluation, the instruments being student feedback, faculty self-appraisal, and specially commissioned consultant review of every module. Findings are acted upon summatively, to enable improvement in the next round of teaching. The summary of student evaluation of modules are also posted to the Intranet and shared with all students, so before you enroll in a module, you can check up first on the findings of the last evaluation.

(5) A dedicated Programme Office to support your studies

The office which manages the Programme is people-centric. We respect and value our students and understand that you are foremost busy professionals, so we go the extra mile for you, for example, printing notes and supplying the books, putting a staff on duty in the evening whenever there is a class on, and opening on Saturday morning as well whether there is a class or not as we realize that it may be the only morning you can get time off to come in to get your books or notes, pay your fees, or talk to us in person. Nearly all lectures are recorded, so if you miss a class because you are sick or have to be out of Hong Kong, you can always catch up by downloading the lectures and the notes.

The Programme Office staff places major emphasis on customer service, responding quickly and precisely to requests by phone, fax or email, ensuring that your interaction with the Programme is as efficient as possible. It is our goal to ensure that you feel supported in your learning, and that you receive a high quality of service throughout your enrolment. We also want you to continue your affiliation with the programme after graduation through the graduates’ bulletin Meicom Connect, we will alert you by email to attend the public Expert Addresses given by the overseas faculty, and we welcome you back to study new modules at half fee for professional upgrading.
