Graduates and students: In their own words
 |
Two years ago, I started a new
business - distribution of fast moving personal care products, in which I
did not have any experience. It was difficult for me to develop distribution
networks in both Hong Kong and China. This programme inspired me with many
e-commerce ideas. Recently, I utilized some e-marketing techniques learnt in
one of the modules to promote my products. The result was fantastic! To
think how to apply what you have learnt from this programme to your work is
very important. |

I graduated with a bachelor's
degree in computer science in Canada. After working for several years in the
IT industry in Hong Kong, I would like to extend and broaden my knowledge in
the IT industry. I chose the MSc(ECom&IComp) programme in HKU because of the
reputation of HKU, the curriculum of the programme, and the professors and
experts in the field both from HKU and worldwide institutions. The programme
has equipped me with the latest knowledge and skills about technology
development and business opportunities in electronic commerce on the
Internet. Professors and experts in the field have also shared their
experiences and incorporated business scenarios to illustrate underlying
concepts. The programme not only has extended and broadened my knowledge in
the IT industry, but also has equipped me with hands-on experiences through
projects worked as a team and as an individual. It enriched me with
knowledge and valuable practical experiences for my future career. |

Having been working for more
than two decades, all my previous studies were done by part-time or distance
learning. In search of another postgraduate programme, I found that
MSc(ECom&IComp) covers the latest knowledge in business and technology.
I selected this programme because one of the main clusters focuses on
"security and legal", which I have a keen interest in this field.
I enjoy every class and the chance to share with professors and classmates.
From their rich experience and expertise in their field, I learnt a lot of
theories and most importantly is the life sharing. Working in a
technical support job for long time, I have never reviewed the daily
operation from legal perspectives. After studying "Legal aspects of IT
and e-commerce", I found myself more sensitive on the liabilities that we
should have as an IT professional.
This programme is so well organized that when you enroll in a module, you
already know the date, time and venue for all lectures and exam. With
more than 25 years of part-time study experience, this is very amazing.
To maximum the learning award, I recommend you to get prepared before every
lecture. Also with an open mind and willingness to share, you will
find yourself not only be proud of the programme but also as a student of
The University of Hong Kong. |

I like the program involved
professors and peers with industry. And it is tailored to stimulate critical
thinking which benefits realize, analyze, select and manage business in IT
industry.
First of all, professors in my classes are world class. They are
broad my horizon in mobile commerce, web technology, business administration
etc., but also inspired me in these area in the future.
Furthermore, entrepreneur spirit is embedded in each lecture, case
study and group project activities. It really helps me improve both my
attitude and solution in facing challenges.
I had been to Hong Kong for business and vacation before. However,
having studied this programme enables me to harvest much more than my
expectation in culture exploration and international vision. In particular,
I gained an opportunity to acquaint myself with such influential businessmen
as WuJinglian, Henry M. Paulson, Jr., Stephen Schwarzman (Chairman, CEO and
Co-Founder of The Blackstone Group) and many entrepreneurs, executives and
IT managers of list company, investment bank and strategy consultant firms. |

After finishing my Bachelor's
degree in France in Mathematics and Computer Science, I decided to come to
Hong Kong to complete my studies with a Masters in Computer Science. During
my first semester I chose an elective module from the Ecom program. I
realized that this mixture of Technology and Business suited me more than
the very technical aspect of the Computer Science Masters and therefore
asked for a transfer.
It is quite certain that due to China's growing importance in
worldwide economy, the best choice for me was to come and get some
experience and an understanding of Chinese culture, values, and ways of
doing business.
When I decided to do my Masters' degree in China, I looked into
universities that taught in English in Singapore, HK and Taiwan and decided
to apply to HKU due to its very high ranking among the world's top
universities, and its excellent reputation in Engineering and Computer
Science.
What impressed me the most was the quality of the teaching of not
only the visiting professors, of which many are icons in their domain, and
from top Universities such as CMU and Stanford, but also of the permanent
professors. In fact the professor whose class convinced me to switch my
Masters to MSc(ECom&IComp) was a HKU permanent professor.
Since finishing my masters' degree I am working in a Bank in Hong
Kong and although it is a French bank, I can notice differences in the work
place as the majority of the employees are from HK or from mainland China.
Hours are longer than most of my friends back home, pressure is higher but
the work is very challenging and the sense of being in such a dynamic
environment is quite rewarding.
Concerning my experience as a student in Hong Kong, I would say that
in comparison with France there is much more competition between students
but there is a lot to learn from classmates as many classes involve group
works and projects which pushes students to meet and exchange views and
ideas. On an extra-curricular side, Hong Kong is an amazing place to live in
and offers a huge span of activities. Cultural events are very frequent, and
an interesting difference between France and Hong Kong on the social side is
that students and working people mix much more and therefore it is much
easier to make contacts with professionals and businessmen. |

I have worked in the IT field
for 9 years after obtaining my bachelor's degree in Computer Science and
Applied Mathematics and Statistics in New York. After joining the programme
in 2009, I have learnt that IT is not only about technologies. The MSc(ECom&IComp)
programme inspired me to re-think all the IT projects that I had worked on
from the business perspective. The instructors of the programme have various
backgrounds, such as professors from leading institutions, industry
professionals, and company executives, which encourage students to think
from different perspectives. The programme also has students from different
industries, which allows learning from each other and broadening of views. I
could not help but notice that the courses were also updated in contents
each year and sometimes new modules were introduced to adopt the rapidly
changing world of electronic commerce. |
