Frequently Asked Questions

In an effort to make the MSc Admission process as clear and informative as possible, we have created this webpage devoted to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on different subjects. We hope you find the FAQ sections helpful.

General FAQs

1. When does an academic year start?

Our programmes are run on semester system, commencing in September.

For the academic year 2013/2014, the duration of each semester is as below:

Semester 1: September 2013 - December 2013
Semester 2: January 2014 - late April 2014
Semester 3: May 2014 - August 2014

2. What are the class schedules?

Classes are held on campus and are normally held on weekdays evenings from 6:45pm-9:45pm, with a short break for tea at around 8:00 pm. For modules which are taught by overseas visiting lecturers, classes are held most in evenings within or just over a fortnight and often on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

3. What type of time commitment is involved? What is the workload?

Each module includes a total of 30 in-class hours.  Workloads vary from module to module, and from student to student, depending on your own learning style and familiarity with the material.  A general rule of thumb is that for every 3-hour lecture, approximately three-five hours of additional work are needed for class preparation and projects.  Work in between classes includes group projects and assignments.

4. Can I apply for exemption and/or advanced standing?

Module exemption may be granted if candidates can produce evidence, such as transcript and course syllabus, that a module is equivalent in content to another module elsewhere for which a satisfactory grade has been obtained. No credits will be given for the exempted module and candidates may be required to take additional and/or alternative modules in lieu of the exempted modules. e.g. A student who has granted exemption of a core module may take an additional elective module instead.

Advanced standing of up to three modules may be granted on the following conditions:
(i) the programme is at postgraduate level offered by a recognized institution;
(ii) a satisfactory result is obtained from the course concerned; and
(iii) evidence such as transcript and syllabus is submitted to prove that the course concerned is equivalent in content to a module as prescribed in the regulations and syllabuses.

Application must be made to the Programme Office at the time of application for admission.

5. Does concurrent registration allow in HKU?

Students registered to read for a postgraduate curriculum at this University MUST NOT be registered simultaneously to read for another qualification in this University or at another institution, except with the approval of the Board of Faculty of Engineering given in advance. A breach of this Regulation in Hong Kong or elsewhere may result in the student concerned being required to discontinue studies at this University.

6. Is there any financial assistance to local students?

Since we are a self-funded programme, we are unable to offer financial assistance to local students. Additional support is provided in the form of Government Schemes (Extended Non-means Tested Loan Scheme, Continuing Education Fund).

Please refer to the Financial Assistance section for more information.

7. Am I eligible for membership of professional bodies after graduation?

Our graduates are eligible for membership to Institute of Certified E-Commerce Consultants (ICECC) and China General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) since 2011.
